FPJDC Hosts Food Drive

The staff of Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center recently hosted a food drive to benefit the Tangi Food Pantry of Hammond, LA The Detention Center has been a long-time contributor to the non-profit food bank, annually donating fresh produce grown by the juvenile residents as part of a restorative-justice approach in encouraging community activism.   The drive was organized into a competition between the various teams and departments of the Center, and added excitement to the collection process.  After counting hundreds of food items it was determined that the employees of D Team were official winners of the 2012 Food Drive.  Congratulations D Team!  In very close standing, C Team members were awarded second place for their generous contributions.   The Detention Center is extremely proud and grateful to have a multitude of employees eager and willing to support such a worthy cause.  We owe a special thank you to all employees for making this year’s food drive a great success!  We look forward to continuing our support of the Tangi Food Pantry and helping to feed families in our local communities.

The Tangi Food Pantry

Since beginning its fight to eliminate hunger in 1987, the Tangi Food Pantry has been a very important resource to the citizens of Tangipahoa Parish and surrounding areas.  Roughly half of all Louisiana residents are considered “low income,” and at least 15% of households are often forced to choose between adequate nutrition and purchasing other daily essentials.  Each year, donations to the Tangi Food Pantry provide over 40,000 of our neighbors with much-needed food assistance.  Sadly, many of these neighbors are children.  In Tangipahoa parish alone, 74% of the youth in the public elementary and middle school system live in a state of poverty, and it is estimated by the United States Department of Agriculture that one in four children face hunger in their homes.  For more information on the Tangi Food Pantry and their community contribution, please visit their website at http://www.tangifoodpantry.org/
